The Alpha Alpha Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from college-bound high school seniors for the following scholarships:

• Sonja W. Garcia Leadership Award | $1,000

• HBCU Heritage Award | $1,000

• Alpha Alpha Theta Omega (AATO) Scholarship | $1,000

 

The Sonja W. Garcia Leadership Award was established in honor of our chapter’s Organizing President, Sonja W. Garcia, a dedicated 50 year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. For decades, she has held multiple leadership roles locally, regionally and internationally. Her passion for youth has been demonstrated through her unwavering commitment to higher education, leadership development, community service and youth empowerment.

 

Students who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University will be considered for the HBCU Heritage Award.

 

A third recipient will be awarded the AATO Scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Applicants cannot have a parent or guardian who is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

2. Must be a graduating senior from a Northern Hillsborough or Pasco County High School.

3. Must hold a minimum of 3.0 grade point average.

4. Must submit a letter of recommendation from your school administrator, counselor, or teacher.

5. Must submit a 200 – 300 word, typewritten, double-spaced essay on one of these topics:

   1. If you had the opportunity to explain your strategy for success to a historical figure, who would that be and what would you tell them?

   2. Describe how you have overcome an economic, academic, or personal challenge.

   3. Identify a major issue in our country and propose a solution.

   4. Choose one of the following Gen Z figures and describe an aspect of their accomplishments that you admire and aspire to achieve:

      • ​Amanda Gorman

      • Travis Hunter Jr.

      • Adwaith "Ad" Praveen

   5. If you had the opportunity to create a program or initiative at your school or in your community, what would it be and why?

6. Must submit a completed scholarship application.

7. Must submit current, officially sealed transcript.

8. Must be postmarked by deadline: Wednesday, April 30, 2025
